Overview

Under the supervision of the Library Operations and Circulation Manager, this person will provide coverage on an as needed basis and provide a variety of services related to the circulation services or other library services of the library. This position works as needed up to 18 hours per week or up to 25 hours during peak times. This individual will be required, on occasion, to come to work with minimum advance notice in order to cover for regularly scheduled staff who report off or in the event the college announces delays or cancellations due to inclement weather. They will be required to participate, on an as needed basis, in various outreach events including but not limited to, extended hours for final exams, and other outreach efforts, etc.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or educational equivalent. Required

EXPERIENCE

  • One (1) year work experience in a library or equivalent experience in a public service environment. Required

ABILITIES AND SKILLS

  • Must possess a friendly presence, professional demeanor, and helpful attitude. Required
  • Must be responsible, reliable, and able to assess a variety of situations due to the dynamic environment of Circulation. Required
  • Ability to work on own initiative. Required
  • Ability to become knowledgeable of library and department guidelines and procedures and college policies and procedures. Required
  • Ability to handle constantly changing flow of activity and transactions at the Circulation desk; remain productive during slow times; be able to multitask effectively during busy times; maintain composure and professionalism during stressful situations. Required
  • Good problem solving skills. Required
  • Ability to perform basic troubleshooting on library equipment. Required
  • Functional ability with computers and Microsoft Office programs. Required
  • Effective oral and written communication skills Required

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide coverage and customer service at the Circulation service desks.
  • Perform circulation operations, including but not limited to shelving and general stack maintenance, using established library guidelines and procedures.
  • Utilize the library online system to execute circulation, reserve, and booking transactions.
  • Answer the telephone at the Circulation desks, direct calls, answer routine questions, deliver messages, and provide prompt response to library loading dock entrance request calls.
  • Be observant and respond, as appropriate, to alarms at the security gates and alarmed exits doors using established guidelines and procedures.
  • Assist patrons in the operation of microcomputers, scanners, projectors, audiovisual equipment, copiers, assistive technology equipment and devices, fax, and other equipment in reference and Circulation areas of library.
  • Understand, follow, and communicate established library guidelines and procedures to patrons using the library.
  • Act as a liaison between patrons and staff.
  • May be required to work in other departments of the library to provide assistance, support, and coverage as needed for library service desks and areas.
  • Open and close the library using established procedures.
  • Provide assistance, support, and occasional coverage for staff and students working in non-library departments of the library building.
  • Direct the activities of and assign duties to student workers; train as appropriate

  • ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Enter data for various circulation reports, utilizing appropriate software applications
  • Physical Standards and Special Job Features

    • Ability to push loaded book trucks on wheels; weight of loaded book truck is dependent upon incumbent’s own physical capabilities.
    • Ability to reach shelves at heights of approximately 82" high while standing on step stool.
    • Frequent lifting not to exceed 35 lbs.
    • Standing for long periods of time.

    Pay Transparency

    Hourly rate is $16.99.
